Wall Preparation is fundamental to a good installation.
Your wallpaper installation is only as good as the wall surface, so the necessary preparation is required prior to application. Please take note of all the items outlined below regarding what a recommended wall surface should be. This is a guideline and should be followed however WCI Wallpapers Pty Ltd does not accept any liability and cannot allow for every circumstance as it is impossible to determine the history of the wall surface/ application/ paint used/ surface preparation and any sequence of events that was carried out on the wall surface prior to application.

Wall Preparation Guideline
- WCI Wallpapers excepts absolutely no liability with regards to issues (eg: delamination, staining of the wallpaper etc) relating to the incorrect wall surface preparation despite providing adequate information below on how to prepare a wall surface for wallpaper installation. Information about the wall surface needs to be brought to the attention of WCI Wallpapers Pty Ltd in advance prior to installation.
- The client is hereby informed that it is necessary to allow sufficient time (at least 48-72 hours) after walls have been painted, skimmed or primed, or longer if necessary, to ensure the surface is completely dry before application of wallpaper;
- Eco based formulation of water based primers are not recommended as a suitable surface for adhesion of wallpaper as delamination may result. In the event that the client has already applied an eco-based formulation of water based primer, it is highly recommended that an oil based primer be applied prior to wallpaper installation;
- Poly-skimmed surfaces and areas where the wall sub-straight (surface) has been filled with a polyfiller type of compound (acrylic filler), must be either primed first with an oil based primer or alternatively covered with a bonding liquid in order to prevent the wall sub-straight in these areas from crumbling or breaking down and as a consequence causing delamination of the wallpaper and the surface structure attaching itself to the wallpaper and thereby rendering it unsuitable for adequate adhesion;
- Expansion joints: There is a risk of delamination over the expansion joints and the client should take note of the fact that if wallpaper is applied over such joint, the form of the expansion joint may be visible to a greater or lesser degree depending on the severity as well as the depth and width of the expansion of the joint. There are specialist filler applications on request. Please contact us for more information.
- Sanding/ preparation of the surface of the wall for wallpaper – Please take care when sanding the walls prior to application. It is recommended to use a fine sandpaper and not a rough or heavy grit sandpaper. The rough texture and heavy sanding may cause the existing paint film to be broken and furthermore remove actual surface gypsum. This may result in delamination of the wall covering. Please note that walls using Rhinolite cannot be sanded as this may cause a breakdown in the plaster surface.
- GENERAL NOTICE: It is the client’s responsibility to inform the authorised responsible person for the application of the wallpaper – of the condition of the wall surface (refer to above mentioned points) prior to the application of the wallpaper to the designated
- Walls should be smooth and flat, preferably primed with an oil based primer for good adhesion. Please consult our Wall Preparation Guideline for more
- It is the responsibility of the client/ professional/ contractor/ painter to ensure that walls are prepared correctly for wallpaper application. Failure to do so may result in a breakdown of the wall surface (delaminate) and WCI Wallpapers Pty Ltd accept no liability as a result of incorrect wallpaper preparation. If unsure, please contact us for more information about how to prepare your walls for wallpaper.
- It can also be recommended to size the wall with adhesive to create another layer for the wallpaper to adhere to. This can sometimes be useful if you do not know what the wall was painted with and creates a barrier for the wallpaper to adhere to and may prevent the possibility of the wall surface breaking down.
- Walls should also be checked for moisture content. Using a moisture meter, measure the wall surface and it is recommended that wall coverings should not be installed if the moisture reading is more than 5%.
Understanding how to measure your walls is critical to a successful project.
We require the width and height of your wall(s) in order to calculate how many rolls of wallpaper you need or to custom print wallpaper to the exact required size.
We do offer on-site measurements for projects surrounding our showroom locations. You can get in touch with us to make an appointment to come measure.
Standard Wall
All you need to do is measure the full height and width of the wall, including all skirting and cornices. Always remember to add at least 10% wastage regardless to your sizes to avoid any short measurements.
Please feel free to send us a diagram of your wall to ensure the most accurate measurements.
Slope Wall
Measure the width and height of the greatest lengths on your wall only, ignoring any slopes on the wall. It is important to remember that your wallpaper or mural is calculated based on the full surface area of the wall.
Take your time to ensure that the width of your wall is correct, so rather over estimate than under estimate.
Pitched Wall
If you have two slopes, take the highest point of the wall as your actual and full height throughout. Measure the widest point of the wall as normal. You should ignore the slops of the wall and consider the wall measurements as a full square. You wallpaper or mural is calculated on the full surface area.
Doors and Walls
When you have doors and walls, you can ignore them and include them in your measurements as we calculate the wallpaper or mural based on the full surface area.
What we do ask is to send us a diagram like this and we will work it out for you if you get stuck.
