Grass cloth wallpapers are traditionally produced in China, and many of the high-quality, handmade grass wallpapers originate primarily from Asia. The manufacturing process involves many different steps that are carried out carefully and with experience. After harvesting, the fibres of grass varieties such as arrow root or Manila hemp are washed and bleached, then dried and, if necessary, treated. Knotting the individual blades of grass creates the starting yarn for the subsequent weaving process. Attractive patterned fabrics are then created on hand looms, which are laminated onto the backing layer (traditionally rice straw paper in China).”
